Government officials, business owners, and the Hammond community are excited about the Towle Community Theater and what it will mean to economic development in downtown Hammond.

The theater is located at 5205 Hohman Ave. The first phase of the project, the 120-seat theater opened Friday, September 5, 2003. The stage is a modified thrust stage, with the center section eliminated, so that the audience sits on only two sides of the auditorium. The bleacher style arrangement assures good sight lines from most seats with, perhaps, the stage level seats less able to encompass the action in its entirety. Another stage, seating 240, is the second phase of construction.
About five years ago, the Hammond Development Corp. purchased the building, which had most recently been a country-western bar. The space was renovated by Morris Architects & Associates, which just completed the Looking Glass Theater project in Chicago. Shortly after the purchase, the Hammond Urban Enterprise Association was approached for a partnership grant. The HUEA Board of Directors agreed the project was a key to Hammond’s progress and pledged support for the project.
